Encoding dictionaries

چکیده
This article describes the major problems in devising a TEI encoding format for dictionaries, which, because of their high degree of structuring and compression of information, are among the most complex text types treated in the TEI. The major problems for this task were (1) the tension between generality of the description, in order to be widely applicable across dictionaries, and descriptive power, that is, the ability to precisely describe the particular structure of any given dictionary; and (2) the need to accommodate different views and uses of the encoded dictionary, for example, as printed object and as a database of information.

A lexicogrammatical perspective in encoding dictionaries ―with reference to ‘pain’ examples in English and in Japanese
This paper addresses a problem in the current encoding bilingual dictionary models, and argues for the necessity of having a lexicogrammatical perspective in such dictionaries, by discussing a pair of equivalents in English and in Japanese. Because existing encoding dictionaries base their models on decoding dictionaries, they force users to start from a fixed lexical item. This paper demonstra...
متن کاملPattern Encoding on the Poincare Sphere
This paper presents a convenient graphical tool for encoding visual patterns (such as image patches and image atoms) as point constellations in a space spanned by perceptual features and with a clear geometrical interpretation. General theory and a practical pattern encoding scheme are presented, inspired by encoding polarization states of a light wave on the Poincaré sphere. This new pattern e...
متن کاملElectronic Dictionary Encoding: Customizing the TEI Guidelines
The Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) Guidelines propose an encoding scheme that is applicable to a large variety of dictionaries. This paper takes a widely-used and simple French dictionary (Petit Larousse Illustré) as an example to describe some of the problems that arise when using the TEI Document Type Definition (DTD), particularly from an editorial standpoint, where it is necessary to retain...
